What does the word «etalon» mean? In metrological practice they often confuse the standard — etalon, measure and the standard — a normative document for example GOST. The etalon can reproduce any measuring value (or part of the scale) if only these values are known with the required accuracy and are stably reproduced over time. In this article some interesting thoughts about what actually etalon reproduces are introduced, and several definitions of the term are given.

Prof. Andrew J. Wallard, Director of the BIPM: Metrology has always had its eyes firmly fixed on practical steps in order to provide that «bridge to innovation ». Whitworth, that great British Victoria engineer said «You can only make as well as you can measure» and we are still faced with solving a measurement challenge so as to make a better product or to stimulate innovation. We are always trying to see why nature limits our ability to make a certain measurement, and then asking if the limit is a fundamental one or if, by coming up with some clever idea, we can go further. There is no doubt that metrology and science are interlinked and that the ability to make a better measurement opens up new opportunities.

Even at that time those questions were rather timely. Metrology development was very tightly connected with astronomy, arithmetic, geometry and other units of ancient science. The following article is very rich in the examples of ancient achievements and discovery and the role of metrology is very clearly reflected in all of them.

Nowadays everyone will agree that metrology began with material measures, but measures appeared step by step and it happened not in every measurement type. The oldest ones are the measures of length and weight. The measure of capacity also can be considered one of the most ancient. That is why the development of theory and practice has different history and development time. The following article is devoted to metrology, its theory and it includes very interesting history facts.
