For almost every magazine issue we prepare detailed reviews dedicated to Rigol test and measuring equipment. Recently we already published articles about Rigol digital oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analyzers and power supplies. But besides the above areas there is one more that we would like to analyze within the present article — this is Rigol M300 multichannel measuring system. Read the current article for more details about Rigol system.

It’s a well-known fact that oscilloscope measurements result in oscillogram. In respect to logic analyzers the situation is quite different because there is no common name accepted and existing for the digital data set resulting from their measurement. Sometimes they use such terms like «digital signal» or «datagram» but their meanings are either too broad or reflect some other specified technical processes. For our article we have chosen «digigram» term derived from «digital oscillogram». To operate these digigrams you may use software under world famous AKTAKOM trademark. The operation process is described within the present article in a very detail.

Over the past decade, data communication rates have increased by a factor well over 10x. Data rates that were once 1 Gb/sec and below are now routinely greater than 10 Gb/sec. RF and Optical Communications utilize complex modulation schemes and low amplitude signals to meet channel data capacity and regulatory requirements. This has driven the need for very high bandwidth real-time oscilloscopes for the validation, certification, and debugging of these new system designs. As a result, oscilloscope designers are driven to extend the performance of real-time oscilloscopes to cover requirements up into the 60 GHz-70 GHz range and beyond. This article compares the techniques used to extend the bandwidth performance of real-time scopes, and introduces the latest innovation in this pursuit — Asynchronous Time Interleaving.

MSO is a ubiquitous term in the oscilloscope market today. An MSO, or Mixed Signal Oscilloscope, is a 2 or 4 channel oscilloscope with 8 or 16 (rarely more) logic analysis channels built in for timing analysis. The main benefits of this integration are time correlation between signals on the analog and digital channels of the oscilloscope, and more powerful triggering between the two. In this article, we will discuss why the MSO was created, popular applications of the technology, and some measurement tips and tricks for getting the most out of mixed signal oscilloscopes.

The movement from analog to digital oscilloscopes has opened up a new world of measurement opportunities for engineers. Using an ADC paired with a plotter instead of a sweep generator paired with a CRT gives you the ability to change how your signal is acquired. To get the most confidence out of your oscilloscope readings, it’s crucial to understand the strengths and weaknesses of different acquisition modes. Learn how normal, averaging, and high resolution modes work and when you should use each one.

KIPiS ¹ 2, 2016, contains the article by Daniel Bogdanoff (Keysight Technologies) named «Make Great Oscilloscope Measurements». There the author directly correlates the signal frequency measurement precision and the selected horizontal sweep of the digital oscilloscope when measuring test meander frequency of 100 kHz. According to the article the measurements were taken with InfiniiVision 4000X series. After reading it we would like to check the author’s results and therefore used Tektronix MDO4104C. Read the present article to see what results we managed to get in the end.

Switching power supply can be the source of high frequency noise. When you first switch it on it causes the generation of current with a very short response time. Such inrush current can reach rather high values. We have found a solution for this measurement task. To test such inrush current and analyze it it’s recommended to use Rigol DS6000, DS/ MSO4000, DS/MSO2000 series oscilloscopes with additional probes and special Rigol Ultra Power Analyzer software. Read the present article for more details.

Traditional spectrum analyzer measurements of RF device performance are classically measurements of non-linear performance such as harmonics, Third Order Intercept (TOI) or input related spurious responses. A very common non-linear measurement that is made is the adjacent channel power measurement that determines the amount of power relative to the power in the channel that appears in adjacent channels. These types of measurements tend to predict how spectrally pure a given RF device will perform when multiple receivers or transmitters are present. Modern signal analyzers retain the ability to make these classic non-linear distortion type measurements as well as in-channel phase and flatness distortion-type measurements.

In new designs, the level of integration among processors, sensors, and communications has increased, blurring the traditional lines between analog, digital, RF and power system design. Wireless technology is transforming the way engineers need to innovate, design, debug and troubleshoot. Prior to the invention of the mixed domain oscilloscope there was no single instrument optimized for these types of measurements. This article explains how a mixed domain oscilloscope (MDO) combines the technology of a state-of-the-art mixed signal oscilloscope with spectrum analyzer hardware and software to provide a complete set of capabilities for measuring your highly-integrated designs.

Testing and characterizing the perfor-mance of switch mode power supplies (SMPS) and linear DC-to-DC converters requires a broad range of special power-related measurements. For years, power supply designers have been using stan-dard bench top oscilloscopes to perform these measurements manually. Today however, many oscilloscope vendors offer licensed power measurement options that can perform many of the required mea-surements automatically for you.

The introduction of high-resolution oscilloscopes is the responds to the in-creased necessity for more in-depth signal analysis in particular in A&D, automo-tive, medical and power analysis applica-tions where it is often required to view signals with both large and small voltage details. When evaluating an oscilloscope for such applications, its vertical resolu-tion is becoming more and more a key parameter to look at, besides standard parameters like bandwidth, sample rate and memory depth. This article explains the necessary theory and introduces the applied filtering technique.

Reserve power supply battery systems take the leading role maintaining the main functionality in the ready mode when the electricity supply is off. Data processing centers, hospitals, airports, railways, community service and many other facilities cannot do without fully reliable reserve power supply. The majority of such systems use uninterruptible power supply sources and battery sets. The current article describes advanced methods to keep such battery blocks operable and the general reserve power supply battery system ready for further work in case of power outage.
